obama at his news conference when he felt like republicans senators were beating up unnecessarily on susan rice? >> i think the republican senators were right in raising the question of why did soup rice go on five stations, five or six days after that -- and i don't think they were beating up on susan rice. in a way, i don't think it's all about susan rice. i think it's actually what happened. who made the memo changes, what did the white house know, when did they know it, what were they told and why did the president give a speech at the u.n. talking about the video when it was really a terrorist attack by al-qaeda and other groups like that? >> ultimately you think you'll get the committee? >> i think the american people will demand it. >> great to have you on board. thank you for joining us. >> thank you. >> stay with us. fair and balanced next in the second half hour of our discussion on this subject, the congressman, adam schiff, views on the petraeus testimony will also be explained here. stay with us [ male announcer ] this is anna, her long day teaching the perfect swing
obama is going to look at his legacy and looking at markets. he has a terrific opportunity right here and right now to embrace small business, get the markets growing again and really do a lot for his legacy in the long run. rick: simon, americans do seem to want to see a certain level of cooperation between the parties. you know, but this is a president who has not really shown a willingness to reach across the aisle. now in his second term does that change? >> well, i don't agree with the first statement but i think that he has made it clear from his statements of the last few days that he expects to work with john boehner and republicans and mitch mcconnell in the senate to try to, you know, tackle a few big things. i think one of the things my, the other guest said, which is just fallacious and wrong and shouldn't be repeated is that the idea that the raising rates on people over $250,000 is going to hit a majority of small business owners. >> simon, you're not even a small business. you're a policy wonk. >> you keep saying it doesn't make it true. 97% of small business owners wil
of washington and elsewhere, right? they are being felt in afghanistan, president obama losing his cia director and wondering about general john allen. we have the author of "little america, the war within the war for afghanistan." nice to have you back on the program. you say you've just heard it from general allen's camp, what are some of the news that you can report about general allen, and all of this news about him potentially being involved in a scandal himself? >> yeah, jenna, late breaking developments here. we heard overnight, of course, that the pentagon was saying that there were 20 to 30,000 pages of documents of emails supposedly exchanged between general john allen, the top commander in afghanistan and jill kelley, this woman at the heart of the petraeus-broadwell scandal. a senior u.s. official who is close to general allen has just told me that in fact it wasn't 20 to 30,000 separate emails, there were hundreds of messages, but really not the big number that is being bandied out there and said that most of these were similarly innocuous messages, in many cases messages sent by m
the barack obama song where you took all these words. >> right. >> with eve got too much time on the hand. >> word of the year for you guys, anybody? >> lol. >> lol. >> yeah. >> they force amaze balls on me. put it in the script. i go in there and remove it quickly. >> put it in a script. >> i'm not like reading amaze balls today, take that thing out. >> but yet you're bringing it up. >> you brought it here. now we have it. >> take three. movember mustache madness. november is global men's health charity engaging men to grow and women to support the mustache for 30 days in november, and we've brought. >> to support men's charities for health. >> fun for men's health, prostate, testicular and prostate cans everyone initiatives. we've got some of our guys. >> look at this. >> are those real mustaches. >> some of you look like you have been eating manchovies. >> ryan, getting the caterpillar going pretty soon. >> tell that to my wife. >> is it working, sparking conversation and people asking you about it? >> sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> it's a really good cause. their tag line is changing the
? >> the aclu took out a full-page ad in the times, calling out president obama on promises he made and failed to keep in his first term. thri are upset about gitmo, immigration policy and the president's fail tower stand up for abortion rights. joining me is john flannery. so, john, now you are upset. the election's over. guess this timing had to be coincidental. >> no, i don't think so. the headline is yes, you can. and the rest is, yes, you can do more. we push back on our friends and say you have one term to finish what you promised before your first campaign. these three issues -- there are many issues we could talk about, but these are three worthy issues. gaunt gawbt -- guantanamo, a stain on america. how do we handle the onslaught against women by the republican leadership, if not by the bulk of republicans, and the third thing, of course, is what do we do about immigration? two of those three the president has said he has plans. but the first one, guantanamo, not so much. he has eliminated torture and other thing, but there is a lot more to be done. >> you don't think he's done enough
money. >> right. you know, andrea, i hate to sound an optimistic note when it comes to politics, but i do think the signals coming out of john boehner's sort of world, and out of president obama's statement last week is that there can be some common ground here, that president obama, i think, clearly has some leverage due to what happened in the, in his own race, as well as at the senate level. so i think he has that. and then john boehner, i think a little bit more questionable in how much more leverage he has within his own caucus, but we shall see. if both of them can sort of say, look, let's do this, this is important to the country, let's move on, we can disagree about lots of other things, but we're going to compromise and move forward. whether that compromise is not raising the rates, but finding a way to get people, the top 1% of earners to pay more without raising their rates and having that conversation early next year, we're not sure what it is. but i think at this stage, it's important to kind of read the tone and how they look and sound and i think that suggests compromise
borders. so we are fully supportive of israel's right to defend itself from missiles landing on people's homes. >> firm word from president obama. but president obama knows that any mandate he can claim after reelection is one focusing on domestic concerns. does he have the political capital to more deeply engage the united states in a seemingly never-ending conflict, possibly with no foreseeable end. at the table, rule a gentleman bril, chris hayes, my friend and host of "up with chris hayes" here on msnbc and jane eisner, the editor in chief of the jewish daily forward and mark quarterman, research director at the enough project. thank you all for being here. so this is -- as i was saying earlier this morning, this is going to be a pretty sober conversation. i want to be clear that sometimes the topics we take on, on mhp are my wheelhouse and the things that i sort of have my fundamental point to make. today i feel more like the audience in that i feel overwhelmed by this -- these developments. i feel distressed by them. i feel, chris, like we don't have necessarily even the common v
gains tax increase. there are a number of things frightening republicans right now, there's a number of things that should truly be frightening democrats. democrats control the white house, they have a larger majority in the senate. there is certainly some onus on president obama, the white house and senate majority leader harry reid to show that the democratic party can govern in a moment of great fiscal crisis. so i think there's a tremendous amount of pressure to go around here. while the conventional wisdom is that the president is in the driver's seat, i think that there's plenty of leverage to be had on capitol hill. jon: and republicans are not likely going to want to give a whole lot on tax increases. >> there's no doubt. and that's why you sort of look for that line in the sand and whether or not it's going to be drawn on capitol hill. it's not too early to think about 2014 for senators who may be up for re-election in 2014 and even for members of the house. it's never too early in washington to think about your next election, so i don't think there's any doubt that members
. martha, thank you very much. >>> that question to president obama about ambassador rice came from jonathan karl, who joined in on the press conference. questions on all of the big issues. but also on that looming fiscal cliff on january 1st. >> reporter: that's right, george. he used that press conference to lay out very bright lines on where he stands on taxes and the fiscal cliff. holding his first news conference since winning re-election, the president took a hard line on his bottom line. there will be no budget deal without raising taxes on the wealthy. >> when it comes to the top 2%, what i'm not going to do is to extend further a tax cut for folks who don't need it, which would cost close to $1 trillion. >> reporter: in his previous efforts to strike a so-called grand bargain with speaker of the house john boehner, the president proposed $800 billion in new tax revenues. but now, he is seeking twice that. $1.6 trillion in new taxes over the next ten years. that's a bitter pill for republicans to swallow. speaker boehner has called raising tax rates on anybody unacceptable.
the new book. >> gretchen: he had his sites set on president obama. he was convicted in a botched bomb plot . darth vader really his dad home from war. >> yeah. it is. daddy. i told him, sure. can't hurt, right? then i heard this news about a multivitamin study looking at long-term health benefits for men over 50. the one they used in that study... centrum silver. that's what i take. my doctor! he knows his stuff. [ male announcer ] centrum. the most recommended. most preferred. most studied. centrum, always your most complete. >> gretchen: good morning, everyone. it's tuesday, november 13, 2012. i'm gretchen carlson. thanks for sharing your time with us today. we start with a fox news alert. shocking twist. another general under investigation now. this time it's the nation's top commander in afghanistan, general john allen. why was he allegedly sending 30,000 pages of e-mails to the same woman who exposed general petraeus? >> brian: exactly one week after losing a hard fought battle, paul ryan speaking out. >> i'm still a house budget chair, so as i see things, it's part of my job to
environment be easier for us. as a small business owner it's very difficult right now. we don't know where taxes are going, we don't know the situation with healthcare, regulations are increasing every day. say, hey, listen mr. obama, look what happened over the last four years. businesses had to cutback and stop spending. and by doing that a lot of corporations actually inc increased their bottom line. what the government wants to do is bring in more revenue by taxing but keep spending the same amount. at the end of the day nothing changes. they need to give president obama a business 101 course, stop spending and bring in more revenue. >> the budget is actually going to grow even if the sequester were to go into place okay. the budget would grow. the federal government would continue spending even more. we are on a trajectory that is unsustainable here. bill: could you bend that curve with different policy? >> sure, i am ever hopeful that, and you allowed american business to be incensted to do business, brings would tkpwroerbgs it would list government revenues, it would lift this econo
